“Looking towards the sea, but in the centre of the whole island, there was a plain which is said to have been the fairest of all plains and very fertile. Near the plain again, and also in the centre of the island at a distance of about fifty stadia, there was a mountain not very high on any side. In this mountain there dwelt one of the earth born primeval men of that country, whose name was Evenor, and he had a wife named Leucippe, and they had an only daughter who was called Cleito. The maiden had already reached womanhood, when her father and mother died; Poseidon fell in love with her and had intercourse with her, and breaking the ground, inclosed the hill in which she dwelt all round, making alternate zones of sea and land larger and smaller, encircling one another; there were two of land and three of water, which he turned as with a lathe, each having its circumference equidistant every way from the centre, so that no man could get to the island, for ships and voyages were not as yet. He himself, being a god, found no difficulty in making special arrangements for the centre island, bringing up two springs of water from beneath the earth, one of warm water and the other of cold, and making every variety of food to spring up abundantly from the soil. He also begat and brought up five pairs of twin male children; and dividing the island of Atlantis into ten portions, he gave to the first-born of the eldest pair his mother’s dwelling and the surrounding allotment, which was the largest and best, and made him king over the rest; the others he made princes, and gave them rule over many men, and a large territory. And he named them all; the eldest, who was the first king, he named Atlas, and after him the whole island and the ocean were called Atlantic1.”

Remember that the hero or the mythical figure in general represents a symbol, a pattern, so the inconsistencies that arise between the various myths are admissible and are also ways to include that pattern in different situations, in different metaphors.

“Vicino al mare, ma nella parte centrale dell’intera isola, c’era una pianura, che si dice fosse di tutte la più bella e garanzia di prosperità, vicino poi alla pianura, ma al centro di essa, a una distanza di circa cinquanta stadi, c’era un monte, di modeste dimensioni da ogni lato. Questo monte era abitato da uno degli uomini nati qui in origine dalla terra, il cui nome era Euenore e che abitava lì insieme a una donna, Leucippe. Generarono un’unica figlia, Clito. La fanciulla era ormai in età da marito, quando la madre e il padre morirono. Poseidone, avendo concepito il desiderio di lei, sì unì con la fanciulla e rese ben fortificata la collina nella quale viveva, la fece scoscesa tutt’intorno, formando cinte di mare e di terra, alternativamente, più piccole e più grandi, l’una intorno all’altra, due di terra, tre di mare, come se lavorasse al tornio, a partire dal centro dell’isola, dovunque a uguale distanza, in modo che l’isola fosse inaccessibile agli uomini: a quel tempo infatti non esistevano né imbarcazioni né navigazione. Egli stesso poi abbellì facilmente, come può un dio, l’isola nella sua parte centrale, facendo scaturire dalla terra due sorgenti di acqua, una che sgorgava calda dalla fonte, l’altra fredda; fece poi produrre dalla terra nutrimento d’ogni sorta e in abbondanza. Generò cinque coppie di figli maschi, li allevò e dopo aver diviso in dieci parti tutta l’isola di Atlantide, al figlio nato per primo dei due più vecchi assegnò la dimora della madre e il lotto circostante, che era il più esteso e il migliore, e lo fece re degli altri, gli altri li fece capi e a ciascuno diede potere su un gran numero di uomini e su un vasto territorio. Diede a tutti dei nomi, a colui che era il più anziano e re assegnò questo nome, che è poi quello che ha tutta l’isola e il mare, chiamato Atlantico perché il nome di colui che per primo regnò allora era appunto Atlante1…”

1 Alcuni studiosi escludono l’identità del re Atlante con il titano, altri invece la ammettono. Si ricordi che l’eroe o la figura mitica in generale rappresenta un simbolo, un modello, quindi le incongruenze che sorgono tra i vari miti sono da una parte ammissibili, dall’altra sono modi per includere quel modello in situazioni diverse, in differenti metafore.
